Adult Volunteer Positions

Looking to develop or enhance your retail and customer service skills? Want to know more about what happens behind the scenes in a retail operation? Assist with engaging visitors and responding to inquiries, pricing and displaying merchandise, annual inventory, maintaining the sales floor, and helping with crowd control. Customer service experience is a plus!

Requirements: Must be able to stand for an extended period and willing to develop knowledge of Aquarium Store products.

Commitment: Must be available to volunteer at least one-4.5 hour shift a week for a minimum of three months.

Dive in the Red Sea among live coral, eagle rays and exquisite fish. As a member of the Aquarium's dive team, you can explore this habitat and much more! Volunteer divers assist aquaria staff with exhibit maintenance and dive programs for Aquarium guests.

Requirements: Must be open water scuba certified with an accredited agency and have a minimum of 20 logged open water dives. Two dives must have been completed within the last 12 months. View all volunteer diver basic requirements here.

Shifts: Shifts are generally four hours, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Sunday – Saturday. There may be an occasional afternoon shift.

Commitment: A minimum of six dives every three months and at least one surface support shift every three months. Volunteers must commit to one year following introductory training.

This position is perfect for individuals with a biology background who love marine animals. It is also great for candidates looking for training and experience. Volunteers work behind the scenes assisting staff with food preparation, husbandry, and caring for aquariums.

Requirements

Must have the ability to lift at least 30 pounds and stand for extended periods.

Should be comfortable handling bugs such as crickets and mealworms and around snakes and dead rodents. Must be at ease in small, tight spaces and working in environmental extremes such as cold, hot, and dusty conditions. Candidates interested in biology, herpetology, and a love for animals are ideal.

Shifts

Sunday - Saturday: 7:00am – 11:00am, 8:00am – 12:00pm, or 8:00am-2:30pm.

Commitment

A minimum of one four-hour shift each week for three months is required.

Do you love to learn and enjoy connecting with a diverse group of people? This can be the perfect position for you! As a gallery docent you will share information about the aquarium’s exhibits and Virginia’s marine environment with visitors. Applicants with an interest in marine biology are ideal. This is also a great opportunity for retired educators or individuals involved in education.

Requirements

Must have good communication skills, be comfortable with large crowds, interacting with children, and able to stand for an extended period.

Commitment

Following training, a minimum commitment of one three-and-a-half hour shift a week for one year is required.

Training

Stranding Response volunteers promote the conservation of marine animal species through research, response, rehabilitation, and education. Volunteers respond to dead and live marine mammal and sea turtle strandings, help with live sea turtle rehabilitation and medical procedures, assist with marine animal necropsies (animal autopsies), and assist with data collection.

Requirements

Candidates must be physically and mentally fit, able to carry at least 35 pounds, hike for two miles or more, and work in extreme weather conditions. Candidates must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and pass a Virginia background check.

Shifts

Monday-Sunday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. response shifts or 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. husbandry shifts. Shifts may be shorter based on the day's needs.

Commitment

A minimum of three shifts per month (a mixture of both response and husbandry) for at least six months is required.

Training

New volunteers must also attend training on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 8:00am - 3:00pm
