​​​​​​2019 ​Summer Camps at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine​ Science Center​

Ages:  Camps are offered for children ages 6 to 15.  To participate, a child must meet the specified age requirement by the time a camp begins.

Activities:  Virginia Aquarium camps focus primarily on marine science, but also include other science and nature topics.  Camp activities are developed and conducted by the Aquarium's educators and emphasize experiential learning through animal interactions, outdoor investigations, and hands-on activities. See below for the different activities offered for each age-specific camp.

Members-Only Onsite Registration: 

  • Wednesday, March 27 from 4:30-6:00 pm. in the Main Building Lobby

  • Payment must accompany registration.

Registration by mail, phone, or in person:

  • Starting Monday, April 1 for members and non-members

  • Payment must accompany registration.

  • Registrations sent in by mail will not be reviewed and processed until April 1st.

Camp Details:  After registration, you will receive camp-specific forms that must be completed and returned to the Aquarium no later than two weeks prior to camp. When camp forms have been returned, we will send you information on camp activities, check-in time and location. 

Camps For Ages 6-8   (All camps are two days, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

 All Things Nature

July 15-16; July 29-30

Discover the local wildlife as you explore Owls Creek and its surrounding habitats. Collect snails and crabs in the marsh, hike the forest to search for birds, insects, and signs of other wildlife. Meet some of the Virginia Aquarium's Animal Ambassadors.
Fee: $70 members; $90 non-members

Fun With Science

July 1-2

 Discover just how fun science can be through exciting lab experiments and outdoor explorations.
Fee: $70 members; $90 non-members

Camps For Ages 9-12   (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

This Way to the Bay

June 24-28; July 22-26; August 5-9

Explore the diverse habitats and observe some of the animals that make the Chesapeake Bay a unique resource. Search for life in the Chesapeake Bay during excursions to the Eastern Shore and First Landing State Park. Kayak to explore a marsh, take a Dolphin Discoveries boat trip, and trawl for fish and invertebrates.

Fee: $275 members; $325 non-members

W.A.V.E.
July 15-19

This summer, do the WAVE (Wander Across Virginia's Environment) to discover some of Virginia's unique wild places. Search for turtles and frogs in a cypress swamp, hunt for fossils on the York River, and look for snakes in Back Bay.
Fee: $275 members; $325 non-members

Camp For Ages 12-15 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Marine Explorers

July 8-12; July 29-August 2
Do you want to become a marine scientist? Meet aquarium staff and learn about the research they do on local animals. Take an introductory class of SCUBA. Kayak in search of dolphins. Seine the bay and trawl the ocean for fish and invertebrates aboard Virginia Aquarium's Ocean Explorer research vessel.
Fee: $275 members; $325 non-members

Specialty Camps for Ages 9-15 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Fishing for Fun

​July 1-2; August 12-13

Learn about the local game fish of Virginia Beach and why some are being protected. Put your "catch and release" skills to the test as we go fishing on a pier and aboard Virginia Aquarium's Ocean Explorer research vessel. Bring your fishing pole and we'll provide the bait.
Fee: $130 members; $160 non-members

Cool Catches

August 14-16
Get wet and get going on your way to becoming an expert on local fish and invertebrates. Fine-tune your marine biology knowledge during daily collection trips, aquarium maintenance sessions, and hands-on explorations of marine habitats.
Fee: $190 members; $215 non-members
