Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Looking to develop or enhance your retail and customer service skills? Volunteer as an Aquarium store assistant! Volunteers assist with engaging visitors, tagging and displaying merchandise, maintaining the stock room and conducting inventory. Retail and customer service experience a plus. Candidate must be available to volunteer at least one four-and-a-half hour shift a week. Apply now!!

In addition to preparing meals and feeding the animals, volunteers clean enclosures and assist with maintaining animal records. This position requires bending, reaching and lifting. Dive in the Red Sea among live coral, eagle rays and exquisite fish. As a member of the Aquarium's dive team you can explore this habitat and much more! Volunteer divers assist aquaria staff with in-tank maintenance and perform dive programs for the public. For consideration, applicants must be advanced open water scuba certified with at least 25 logged open water dives. Ten dives must have been completed within the last 12 months. If you love to learn and enjoy connecting with a diverse group of people this may be the position for you! As a docent you will share information about the Aquarium’s exhibits and Virginia’s marine environment with visitors. Candidates must have above average communication skills, be comfortable with large crowds and interacting with children. Applicants with an interest in marine biology are ideal. Following training, a minimum commitment of one four-and-a-half hour shift a week for one year is required. Come aboard to see and share information about some of the area’s most interesting aquatic creatures in their natural habitat.  As a volunteer on the Aquarium’s boat trips, you will work closely with an Aquarium educator showing biofacts and other props to facilitate the programming on board the eco-tours.  In addition to being available to answer the guest’s questions about marine life off the coast of Virginia Beach, you will also assist with boarding & disembarkation procedures.  Candidates should be comfortable around water and with public speaking, have previous customer service experience, be capable of working with limited supervision and not be affected by motion sickness. The Green Team Project Coordinator supports these efforts by promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable practices and assisting with green activities. Focus your lifelong passion and basic knowledge of the care of reptiles on this volunteer position. Herpetology assistants aid staff with the daily husbandry needs of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Candidates should be comfortable working in varying environmental conditions. Indulge your love of plants and gardening by serving as a horticulture assistant. Volunteers work closely with the Aquarium's horticulturist to maintain planting areas. Duties include planting, mulching, pruning, weeding, trail beautification and other gardening tasks. Ideal candidates should be comfortable standing, bending and walking for prolonged periods; have the ability to withstand outdoor conditions such as heat, humidity, cold, insects and wild animals; and the ability to use a backpack style leaf-blower, push mower, rake and string trimmer is necessary. Roll up your sleeves and start prepping! Volunteers enjoy the messier side of maintaining the Aquarium's marine mammals by preparing food and assisting staff with cleaning. This position is ideal for candidates who love marine mammals and want to learn more about these amazing creatures. Applicants must be able to lift at least 25 pounds, kneel and stand for extended periods of time and have good hand and eye coordination. A minimum of one 4½ hour shift is also week required. The Virginia Aquarium provides engaging and interactive educational programs to students from preschool to college. The On-site Education Program Assistant will assist the School Programs Specialist with teaching students through hands-on learning such as experiments, live animal presentations, problem-solving, and making observations. Youth Volunteer Opportunities

The youth volunteer application period is closed. Applications are accepted September 1st – February 28th. The following positions will open for the summer 2017 application period.

Volunteer is stationed in the Aquarium’s Changing Exhibits Gallery. He or she greets guests and shares information about the traveling exhibit. Candidates must be at least 13 years old at the time his or her application is submitted and very comfortable interacting with guests.

Volunteers greet guests, share information and actively engage visitors to ensure they experience all of the Aquarium's exhibits. Candidates must be at least 13 years old at the time his/her application is submitted and very comfortable interacting with guests.


Volunteers share information about the Aquarium's exhibits and Virginia's marine environment with visitors. Candidates must be at least 14 years old at the time his or her application is submitted and agree to a minimum four-and-a-half hour shift each week for one year. This is a great volunteer opportunity for home schooled teens.

Volunteer is positioned in the Aquarium’s Nature Play Place on the nature path; shares information with guests about the marsh habitat and encourage visitors to participate in activities and explorations. Candidates must be at least 11 years old at the time his or her application is submitted. Volunteer must be available at least 9 weeks between June and August. 11 and 12 year old nature place docents must be paired with a parent or guardian. Parent’s application must be attached when youth application is submitted. This is a summer position with the option to volunteer during the school year.

Volunteer assists education staff with the Aquarium’s summer sea camps. Candidates must be at least 15 years old with an interest in marine science and/or marine biology. Must be comfortable communicating with children of varying ages and skill levels and have high energy with the ability to lead various recreational activities. Experience working with children preferred. Previous Virginia Aquarium sea camp participants are ideal.

Volunteers assist Toddler Program Coordinator with planning and presenting toddler events. Candidates must have high energy and comfortable working with toddlers. Applicants with artistic and/or musical abilities a plus. Must be at least 14 years old. Available shifts; Tuesdays 9 am – 1 pm or Thursdays 10 am – 12 pm. This is a great volunteer opportunity for homeschooled teens.

This is a summer position. Volunteers greet guests and share craft activities with visitors in the wildflower garden. Candidates must be at least 12 years old, very comfortable interacting with guests and agree to a minimum four-and-a-half hour shift every Wednesday for at least nine weeks between June and August.
