Seasonal Horticulture Assistant

Salary:
$9.68/hour
Hours:
Hours vary, some weekends required.
Requirements:
High school graduate or GED plus some outdoor work experience. Ability to use common gardening and hand tools. Ability to perform physical labor under various climate conditions for extended periods. Ability to bend and kneel for extended periods. Ability to use a backpack blower and string trimmer for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Interact with staff, volunteers, and public in a pleasant and professional manner.
Duties:
Individual will assist the horticulture department with all aspects of nature trail and horticulture exhibit maintenance, including but not limited to; mulching, maintaining, and weeding plant and shrub beds, lawn areas, and walkways; pruning and trimming trees and shrubs; planting, raking, collecting and removing debris; operation of lawn mower, leaf blower, and weed eater. Loading and unloading tools, equipment, soil, gravel, and sand for project assignments; maintaining plants in an indoor environment; storm damage cleanup, and other horticultural duties as required.
Preferences:
Have a general knowledge of horticulture practices and a desire to learn. Knowledge of native Virginia plants is desirable, but not required. Horticulture experience is a plus.

Gallery Educator

Salary:
$9.68/hour
Hours:
Part time; up to 24 hours including weekends and some evenings; hours vary; must be flexible.
Requirements:
High school degree and any combination of college courses and work/ volunteer experience equivalent to two years that includes science or education studies, or teaching in an informal learning environment.
Duties:
As a gallery educator, the individual will conduct programs in the exhibit galleries for daily visitors; conducts behind the scenes tours, supervise volunteers; and assist visitors with customer service needs. As part of the programs, the individual will handle live animals including invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Candidates must be comfortable working independently and with large groups of people.
Preferences:
Work or volunteer experience in informal education (aquarium, museum, etc); animal handling experience; customer service experience; strong verbal and written communication skills.

Exhibit Host

Salary:

High school degree and any combination of classes and work/ volunteer experience that includes science or education studies, or teaching in an informal learning environment.
Duties:
As an Exhibit Host, the individual will interpret aquarium exhibits to guests, conduct programs in the exhibit galleries including Chesapeake Bay and Ray Touch Pools, Upland River and Coastal River for daily guests, assist guests with customer service needs and interact with guests in a positive and engaging manner. Candidates must be comfortable working independently and speaking with large groups of people.
Preferences:
Work or volunteer experience in informal education (aquarium, museum, etc); customer service experience; ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and guests of all ages; ability to handle tasks independently and detail-oriented.
