Baby Spotted Eagle Ray

Say hello to the newest Aquarium member!

Sadana, the mother, gave birth to this spotted eagle ray on July 20. This is the first spotted eagle ray birth at the Virginia Aquarium! That makes the Aquarium one of only ten AZA-accredited facilitied in the world to have successful spotted eagle ray reproduction!

Baby spotted eagle rays are born self-sufficient and do not require parental care. Currently, the pup is in an off-exhibit quarantine area while staff continue to closely monitor the diet, behavior, and welfare of the newborn animal. Our veterinary and animal care teams are providing the pup with additional nutritional support as it gets better at eating on its own. Our team is cautiously optimistic for its future!

Stay tuned for more exciting news, including revealing the sex of the newborn pup and a naming contest!
