The Virginia Aquarium could not run without the daily support of our incredible volunteers. There are dozens of opportunities available for anyone age 11 to 81 (or somewhere in between). You don’t need to be a marine biologist to apply, you just need to share our passion for conservation and educating people about the marine environment and the animals who live there. The Aquarium Connection is a group of professionals and community leaders who come together with the goal of helping to sustain and support the Virginia Aquarium Foundation and our mission of conservation. This group is committed to developing new sources of support and increasing the public awareness of the Aquarium’s exhibits, Stranding Response Program, education programs, and special events.

Internships & Fellowships
We offer several internships for college students throughout the year. These unpaid volunteer positions provide career exploration for rising college juniors and seniors seeking academic credit with an interest in pursuing careers related to biology, marine biology, science education, aquarium sciences, or related support staff positions. All interns must perform duties as required, keep a log of hours and activities, meet with cooperating staff member at least once a week, abide by established dress code, and give the minimum number of hours required for class credit. Interns can expect to receive help from, and access to, cooperating staff, receive experience aimed at enhancing skills and building resume, receive Aquarium intern benefits, and make lifelong contacts.

We also offer fellowship opportunities in marine science, animal care, exhibits, and education, to college or post-graduate students. The Batten Fellowship also includes a stipend to help offset personal and incidental expenses. Available fellowships will be listed here as they are available.
