Mentoring Young Scientists

Fostering a lifelong love of learning is important, and Mentoring Young Scientists (MYS) is a grant-funded program that gives 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students the opportunity to study the marine environment. The MYS program runs from October to May with a total of 20 activity sessions throughout the year. Activities include exploring the marine environment through boat excursions, beach walks, and seining trips, conducting experiments and observational studies, building communication skills by sharing information about the marine environment with Aquarium visitors, and much more.

Do you know a middle school student with a passion for science? Download the application here.

Twenty students are selected annually in September through an application and interview process. To learn more about the MYS program, contact Virginia Aquarium Youth Programs at (757) 385-0278 or Programs@virginiaaquarium.com.

S.T.E.A.M. takes place on select Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Marsh Pavilion, and costs $7 for Aquarium members and $9 for non-members. See the full list of programs on our calendar here.

Upcycling

UpCycling, the Aquarium's newest early learner program, focuses on teaching conservation messages while empowering children to know there are actions that they can take now to help the environment. During each program, early learners will craft a purposeful item using recyclable and non-recyclable items while investigating how these items would otherwise impact the environment. Advanced registration and a program fee are required to participate. Contact our Youth Programs staff at (757) 385-0278 or programs@virginiaaquarium.com for more information or to register.
