The Virginia Aquarium offers several professional development courses to help teachers build their knowledge on science topics and enhance their curriculum with lesson plans. Many of our courses bring you up-close and personal with live animals and offer field experiences and a chance to meet with experts. Our summer 2020 offerings are listed in the document below with information on how to register.
Summer 2020 Teacher Trainings
Teacher Appreciation Night - September 24
Save the date for our next Teacher Appreciation Night! We invite teachers to this special after hour event, where they can explore the Virginia Aquarium, enjoying our many live animal and interactive exhibits. Educators and volunteers will be ready to share information about our animals, programs, and other resources we offer to schools and teachers. Our newest Changing Exhibit will be open to preview, and our Giant Screen Theater will be showing one of our new 3D films. Get here early to snag a spot on a special behind the scenes tour, meet live animals in the lobby, and to earn points toward free resources.
Teachers (+ one guest) will be offered free admission and the opportunity to purchase two additional guest tickets at the school rate ($12 student, $18 adult).
Explore the phases of water with hands-on experiments using our Properties of Water suitcase or examine squid beaks to learn about how animals have changed to be better suited to their environment in the Animal Adaptations suitcase. Compare replica skulls to learn about the differences between omnivores and carnivores in our Food Webs suitcase or journey alongside a sea turtle from egg to adult in the Sea Turtle Science suitcase.

Access Aquarium Grant Program
Teachers seeking funding for their group may apply for assistance through the Aquarium's Access Aquarium Grant program. This donation supported program can cover 50% of the Aquarium admission cost and select educational programs for high-needs schools in Virginia. Beginning July 1, 2019, this opportunity is open to Title 1 schools, Virginia Preschool Initiative programs, Head Start programs, and schools with a Federal Free and Reduced Lunch rate of at least 50%. We encourage homeschool families to visit for a day of fun and learning! Choose the self-guided tour, an educational 3D film, a boat trip, or one of our standards-based programs. Onsite programs can be scheduled for at least 10 students within a similar age range.
We are proud to offer homeschool families the school admission rate. To receive the reduced rate, please have a photo ID and a copy of your notice of intent. We will also accept a current membership card for any homeschool organization. For questions about other forms of documentation, please call our Guest Services Office at (757) 385-3474.
