Programs for Children Ages 4-6

- Pre-registration is strongly recommended. We cannot guarantee that “walk ups” can be accommodated.
- Programs are subject to cancellation if a minimum number of participants have not enrolled two days prior to the program date.

All programs take place in the Marsh Pavilion Discovery Room unless otherwise noted.
January 5 - Little Scientist’s Lab
Here’s your chance to be a scientist and make discoveries
about your world. Learn about the
scientific method while you make and wear your own lab apron as we do
experiments.
January 19 - Let it
Snow
Join us as we learn about the properties of water and
discover the conditions required to make it snow. With are new found knowledge, we just might
be able to make our own “indoor” snow.
February 2 - I love Animals
We heart every animal even the slimy ones. Come and meet some of the area’s least
attractive and most slimy animals as we discuss food webs and how every animal
is important to the ecosystem.
February 16 - Slithery Snakes
Can you imagine living like a snake without arms or
legs? Join us as we re-discover the
world as snakes. We will be slithering,
shedding skin, and learning to detect movement through vibrations.
March 1 - It’s not easy Being Green
With so many recycling rules, it’s hard to figure out how to
help the environment. Come turn green,
literally, with us as we explore fun and easy things we can do to protect the
world’s resources.
March 15 - Wonderful Wind
Don’t get blown away.
March is known for being a windy time of year. Examine how wind is
created and why it is important to many plants and animals.
April 12 - Marsh
Madness
Investigate the mud, grasses, and water that make up the
salt marsh of Owls Creek. Look for snails, fiddler crabs, birds and other
animals that call the Creek their home.
April 19 - Earth Day!
Come celebrate Earth Day.
Learn ways you can invite nature to live in your own back yard, do some
planting on our trail, and make a bird feeder to take home.
May 3 - Marvelous Mommies
Moms make everything better!
Some animal Moms care for their young every step of the way. Other Moms rely on instinct. Come explore the different parenting styles
of animals.
May 17 - Copy Cat Mimicry
Some animals protect themselves by making themselves look
like other animals. Put on your
detective hat as we try and discover who the imposters are.
June 7 - Fabulous Fathers
Three cheers for Dads.
Moms usually get all the credit for raising animal babies, but for some
animals Dad does most of the work. Join
us as we take a closer at great Dads.
July 5 - Investigating Invertebrates
What is an
invertebrate? Where would you find one? We will answer these questions and more
as well as meet some in person. Don’t miss out on the fun!
August 2 - Sea Turtle
Conservation
Sea Turtle’s need our help.
Be part of a mock stranding and find out what it’s like to watch a sea
turtle’s nest as we learn more about these creatures and the simple things we
can do to help them.
September 6 - The Cat’s Meow
Animals like to be the biggest, prettiest, and
strongest. Dress up as your favorite
animal, as we explore the different ways animals try to prove that they are the
best.
September 20 - Playing
Opposum
When scared, some animals go so far as to play dead, spit-up
their stomachs, or leave their tails behind.
Join us as we investigate the neat ways animals react when they’re
scared.
October 4 - Trekking
through Nature
See the colors, smell the marsh, hear the birds, feel the
fur and let the natural world tickle your senses as we hike on the nature
trail.
October 18 - Creatures of the Night
Owls, bats, insects and more…come learn what animals come
out at night in the trees or on the forest floor. Learn what allows some animals to be
nocturnal and meet one of our resident owls.
November 1 - As the Crow Flies
Look up in the sky, what do you see? Hawks, swans or even geese! Find out what migration means and which birds
migrate to Virginia in the fall.
November 15 - Native
American Know How
Hundreds of years ago, televisions, grocery stores and cell
phones did not exist. Become a Native
American for a day and find out how people used to live.
December 6 - Beach Day
Winter blues? Too
cold to go to the beach? Come warm up
inside as we bring the beach to you.
Stick your toes in the sand and learn about the other animals that might
be in the sand too.
December 13 - Hibernation
Hide-out
This might be your only chance to hibernate with a bear, not
a real one of course. Join us as we
learn about hibernation and why some animals need to and some don’t.
