Play Date With The Animals
April 27, Marsh Pavilion, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Flying high, hunting for worms, splashing in the water, and making a soft bed are just a few of the things that animals do in a busy day. Discover and observe how treats, treasures, and training encourages the Aquarium's critters to enrich their lives through creating comfy homes, eating right, playing well with others, exploring their environment, and staying healthy. Join the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center on April 27 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. for special activities and crafts as guests make enrichment toys for the animals to enjoy!

At the Marsh Pavilion Enrichment Stations, guests will have the opportunity to contribute to the animals “Play Date” by making enrichment items for Aquarium animals, as well as some for their pets and backyard inhabitants. The stations will be as follows:
Station 1: Paint Like a Seal: Participants will experience seal painting by using the same techniques that they do: holding the paintbrushes in their mouths!
Station 2: Bird Enrichment: Guests will use colorful wooden blocks, beads, and leather cords to create toys for our umbrella cockatoo, Gabby.
Station 3: Komodo Enrichment: Participants will paint large cardboard boxes for our herpetology staff to utilize for various enrichment purposes on exhibit (see video of the Komodos exploring boxes on YouTube).
Station 4: Backyard Enrichment: Guests will learn how to become a National Wildlife Federation Certified Backyard Habitat, as well as be able to make bird feeders and toad abodes to take home for their wildlife.
Station 5: Pet Enrichment: Participants can make fleece rope dog toys, and feather cat teasers for their critters at home. We also encourage them to feel free to make some, and donate them to local animal rescue and shelter organizations if they do not have a domestic pet of their own.
Station 6: Touch & Scent: Guests will use their senses as our animals to try to decipher various scents, as well as find things using only their sense of touch.
As an added bonus, guests will be encouraged to participate in a scavenger hunt throughout both the Bay & Ocean Pavilion and Owls Creek Marsh Pavilion. The prize will be a Behind the Scenes Tour experience.
