Get an up-close look at the denizens of the deep in Virginia Aquarium’s 300,000-gallon Norfolk Canyon Aquarium. Representing the deep waters of the Norfolk Canyon 35 miles off Virginia’s coast, the Norfolk Canyon Aquarium features some of the most popular Aquarium residents: sharks. Three species of shark (sandbar, nurse and sand tiger), huge roughtail rays and southern stingrays, a barracuda and other fish swim within this realistic two-story habitat. A nearby “submarine” allows a periscope-style view of the aquarium’s surface, and the nurse sharks can often be seen resting above near the aquarium’s bubbler.
