The team was alerted to the seal’s presence on Monday and its health was evaluated at that time. The male juvenile seal’s weight was lean but not seriously thin and its left eye was irritated, but he was bright, alert and quite active. The seal’s location and activity continued to be monitored all week. However, today’s evaluation of the 50-lb. seal showed that he is suffering from a worsening eye infection and there are now some signs of a respiratory infection as well.

Virginia Marine Debris Summit Nets Plan During Virginia Green Certified Event - March 14, 2013 View Release (Virginia Beach, VA) - The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center hosted a two-day Virginia Marine Debris Summit February 27-28. Sponsored by the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program and the Aquarium, the summit welcomed 70 attendees to Virginia Beach and brought together marine debris experts and target audiences.
Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech opened the summit reminding attendees of the importance of addressing the debris issue at its source as well as once trash enters the marine environment. Invited speakers included staff from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and the Environmental Protection Agency, university scientists, non-governmental organizations, and state and local governments.
The goal of the summit was to begin development of a Marine Debris Management Plan for the state as part of an overall water quality strategy of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO). Management options from the summit will be presented to the Virginia Coastal Policy Team and to MARCO for consideration.
Of particular note, the Aquarium food service provided by Sodexo, and all activities during the event generated zero landfill waste. This means the limited amount of waste from the event was entirely recycled or composted. As a result, the event received the highest rating from the state as a Virginia Green Certified Event.

VIRGINIA AQUARIUM SPRING HAPPENINGS - March 11, 2013 View ReleaseTo find out about the exciting events that are scheduled at the Virginia Aquarium between now and early June, please click on the read article or news release link. Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trips Update #4 - February 27, 2013 (Virginia Beach, VA) - Last weekend’s Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trips brought in some unique activity for this time of the year. On February 22, two humpback whales and approximately 20 extremely active bottlenose dolphins were spotted near Rudee Inlet. Virginia Aquarium Educator Janet Schroeder said, “One of the humpback whales was at the surface a lot with its head showing the whale’s nodules/tubercles.”
On Sunday’s trips, Virginia Aquarium Boat Trips Coordinator Alexis Rabon reported that the bottlenose dolphins were the stars of the sea. On all three excursions, the dolphins were extremely active demonstrating behaviors such as breaching, tail slapping, and feeding cooperatively together. Several calves were spotted, and on many occasions, the dolphins rode along the bow, sides, and in the wake of the boat. “The dolphins were highly inquisitive, and treated the guests to many up-close views where they looked directly at guests,” said Rabon. “The water visibility was excellent, and the dolphins could be seen twirling around under the surface.” Sunday’s 9 a.m. trip also experienced a humpback whale sighting.
“Our ‘flight’ crew was also out in full force with northern gannets plunge diving down into the water,” said Rabon. Surf scoters, double-crested cormorants, red-breasted mergansers, great black-back gulls, loons, and brown pelicans were also noted.

“Sea Turtles: A Story of Survival” - February 13, 2013 View Release Sea turtles are among the most endearing marine animals of the sea. Maybe it’s their graceful moves in spite of their hard shell, and perhaps it is because they work so hard at survival. The next speaker of the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Eleanor and Henry Watts Conservation Speaker Series is Patrick M. Burchfield Ph.D., who was a key leader in the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle return from the brink of extinction. His free presentation, “Sea Turtles: A Story of Survival” is March 10, 2 p.m. in the Aquarium’s 3D IMAX Theater. Aquarium Director of Research & Conservation Mark Swingle said, “Dr. Burchfield’s work is truly one of the most amazing conservation stories in the animal world. He is an excellent speaker.”
Guests will watch a short video which illustrates the details of the project. This will be followed by Burchfield’s remarks.
The presentation coincides with the Aquarium’s Trash Bash 2.0 weekend which focuses on marine debris and its effects on the environment. On both Saturday and Sunday, March 9 & 10, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. local and national organizations will provide displays and hands-on activities for guests including stations for recycled craft ideas and environmental games. An art show will feature trash used creatively. Throughout the day, Aquarium educators in the Marsh Pavilion and at the Restless Planet Conservation Station will offer “critter close-ups” and learn why a healthy environment is crucial to their survival.

The Power of the Sea Presentation - January 16, 2013 View ReleaseThursday, January 24, 7 p.m. Free at the Virginia Aquarium IMAX® Theater
(Virginia Beach, VA) - On Thursday, January 24, at 7 p.m. the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center will host a presentation by Bruce Parker, Ph.D., author of The Power of the Sea. Conducted in the Aquarium’s 3D IMAX Theater, his free presentation will focus on the subtitle of his book: Tsunamis, storm surges, rogue waves, and our quest to predict disasters.
Author Bruce Parker has his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from The Johns Hopkins University and he is a world-recognized expert in oceanographic subjects.
The Power of the Sea interweaves compelling stories of marine disasters with fascinating stories of how scientists and mariners slowly learned how to predict them and how this impacted history, including wars. From history to the latest technological advances using satellites and computer models, Parker describes our growing knowledge of the sea and its impact on our lives. From the predictable tides to the difficulty in predicting tsunamis, rogue waves, and certain aspects of climate change, Parker depicts the drama of the seas while clearly explaining the science behind the ocean’s most powerful phenomena. Virginia Aquarium Seals to Winter-Over in Florida - January 09, 2013 View Release (Virginia Beach, VA) – Much like a house, major facility maintenance can be trying on its inhabitants – especially when it is five furry fellows at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s outdoor harbor seal pool. Since there is no place at the Aquarium for the seals to be temporarily housed, they were transported to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, last weekend, where they will remain in residence until the end of March.
Peter, Piper, Phoca, Norton, and Hector traveled by truck with a team of Marine Mammal Specialists to their Florida destination and are adapting well to their new environment according to Aquarium Senior Curator of Mammals Chip Harshaw. “This will not be a true Florida vacation for the seals - it will be more like summer school since they will continue to work with Virginia Aquarium trainers at the Gulfarium Park until their return.
The Harbor Seal exhibit is nearly 17 years old and its roof needs some work and a new heat exchanger that cools the water in the summer. “The first thing guests will notice is that all of the water in the pool has been drained,” said Harshaw. “This is necessary to remove all of the waterproofing epoxy on the bottom of the pool, repair the concrete pool basin of minor cracks, and remove all of the old caulk that seals the acrylic glass to the concrete pool. Once this is completed, a new coat of epoxy and caulk will seal the pool. In addition, the habitat’s acrylic will be polished to a like-new condition before the pool is refilled and ready to house our seals once again.”
Until the Virginia Aquarium seals return to their habitat, locals could possibly see harbor seals in the wild in winter and spring along Virginia’s coastline. Other species known to occur in our area are grey seals, hooded seals, and harp seals. Most seal sightings in Virginia are of an individual animal popping its head out of the water, or sitting on the beach or on someone's dock.

Newly Begun Winter Wildlife Boat Trip Season Rings True - January 03, 2013The Virginia Aquarium’s Winter Wildlife Boat Trip season began last week and apparently whales, dolphins, and sea birds knew it was their time to view visitors.
Last Thursday on the season’s opening day, morning boat guests saw 15 active bottlenose dolphins while the afternoon boat trip saw the first baleen whale of the season, a humpback.
Since then, four other trips had humpback whale sightings. Feathered friends have also been getting their birds-eye view of guests. “Northern gannets, loons, brown pelicans, and other sea birds have been on the scene,” said Virginia Aquarium Educator Jovonne Vrechek. “It’s been a true winter wildlife experience so far!”
Aquarium staff rated Saturday’s 2 p.m. boat trip sighting as the best with four humpback whales and a probable fin whale blow in the distance.
Winter Wildlife Boat Trips run through March 31. Admission costs are: adults $28 (12 and older); children $24 (ages 4-11); and children less than 3 years of age are free. Tickets may be purchased at either Aquarium building or at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet. Virginia Aquarium Composting Pilot Program Ends with Success - November 28, 2012 View ReleaseLast month, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center concluded a year-long Composting Pilot Program which resulted in ten restaurant and food service partners collectively diverting nearly 25 tons of organic waste away from the landfill and back into the productive cycle of organics/compost processing. To mark this occasion Mike Giuranna, Environmental Protection Agency Region III Solid Waste Specialist, will discuss the benefits of composting and recognize the Pilot Program Partners tomorrow, Thursday, November 29, at 12:30 p.m., at the Virginia Aquarium’s Bay & Ocean Pavilion.
The project was funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Initially the program was to operate for six months but the Aquarium stretched the funding to last for an entire year while adding new partners along the way. “Now that these restaurants have developed this new sustainable practice of composting, it is hoped that they will continue while absorbing the minimal costs to do so,” said Virginia Aquarium Director of Research & Conservation Mark Swingle. One restaurant partner, Kristina Pitsilades-Chastain, vice president operations, of Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant, said, “I am sad to see the compost project come to an end but I hope all of us have shown how easily it can be done and how effective it can be. We absolutely want to continue composting.”
The restaurants participating as Pilot Program Partners are also designated Virginia Green which is a statewide program that works to reduce the environmental impacts of Virginia’s tourism industry. Attending tomorrow’s event is Virginia Green Program Coordinator Tom Griffin who has been so impressed with the program that he wants to share the results with all Virginia Green restaurants and businesses as a model.
The ten Pilot Program Partners are: Virginia Aquarium Café by Sodexo; Croc’s 19th Street Bistro; Doc Taylor’s; Tautog’s; Rockafeller’s; Bad Ass Coffee; Captain George’s; Fruitive; Virginia Wesleyan College; and Norfolk Academy. According to the EPA, composting helps prevent methane and leachate formulation in the landfills. It also has the ability to regenerate poor soils, clean-up contaminated soil and prevent pollution. Compost can also be used to control erosion and restore wetlands. There are economic benefits as well since compost reduces the need for water, fertilizers and pesticides. ###
Move Over Virginia Sharks! - November 07, 2012 Nurse, sandbar and sand tiger sharks in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s Norfolk Canyon Aquarium are about to have some competition in size and reputation. Staff is making room in the changing exhibits gallery for a walk-through replica of the extinct Megalodon, which at 60 feet long, could figuratively be called the mother of all sharks. The exhibit Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever Lived dispels myths, confirms facts, examines its culture, and inspires lessons for science and shark conservation today.
This national traveling exhibition, produced by the Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, with support from the National Science Foundation, opens at the Virginia Aquarium November 10 and runs through February 17. It is free with Aquarium admission. As unique as Megalodon was, so too is the exhibition that tells the story of this enormous creature. The exhibition showcases both fossil and modern shark specimens as well as full-scale models from several collections. Visitors enter a full-size sculpture of Megalodon through massive jaws and discover this shark’s history and the world it inhabited, including its size, structure, diet, lifespan, relatives, neighbors, evolution and extinction over 2 million years ago.
3D IMAX® Theater Also opening November 10 in conjunction with the Meglalodon exhibit is Sea Rex 3D: Journey to a Prehistoric World. Audiences at the Virginia Aquarium 3D IMAX Theater will enjoy an incredible voyage, 200 million years back in time, for a face-to-face encounter with the T-Rex of the seas in this IMAX 3D movie on the Aquarium’s six-story high screen. Movie schedules for Sea Rex and other movies and advance ticket sales are available at www.virginiaaquarium.com or by calling (757) 385-FISH.

Virginia Aquarium “Corners” Early Learning - August 30, 2012 View Release Today the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center opened a new area in the Marsh Pavilion aptly named the Children’s Corner. This area was designed to engage children age 6 and under with interactive and creative play opportunities. The brightly colored room features blocks, puzzles, hopscotch, and other age-appropriate activities that enhance the Aquarium experience for younger guests.
The Children’s Corner is located in what was formerly the MicroMarsh exhibit. When this exhibit space needed to be refurbished, Aquarium staff decided to create a space devoted to early learners. This decision was based on experience with this audience:
• Recent surveys reveal that 48% of Aquarium guests visit with at least one child under the age of 12. • Some of the Aquarium’s most popular changing exhibits, Grossology, Animal Grossology, and Little Builders, successfully targeted this age group • Aquarium members frequently ask for more activities for their pre-school children.
Director of Education Chris Witherspoon said, “This new exhibit also reinforces the Aquarium’s commitment to providing educational enrichment opportunities to early learners, as this is one key to building school readiness skills.” Additionally, the Aquarium has one staff member, the early learning coordinator, who develops programs such as Toddler Tuesdays and Early Explorations for this age group and serves on the City’s GrowSmart team. The Aquarium also partners with Virginia Beach Public Libraries for Waves, Words, & Wonder, a grant-funded enrichment program for 4-year-olds and their families.
The exhibit was funded by the Aquarium Connection. This is a group of young professionals and community leaders who support the Virginia Aquarium Foundation’s goals of increasing awareness of the Aquarium’s mission and developing financial resources for exhibits, the stranding response program, educational programs, and special projects.

20 Years and Counting of Virginia’s Coastline Dolphins - July 24, 2012 WHO: Known as among Virginia Beach’s most popular visitors is the bottlenose dolphin. Around 50 volunteers from the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team, who have received special training, will be counting them from the shore.
WHAT: One summer Saturday, usually the end of July, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center conducts its annual Dolphin Count. WHEN: Saturday, July 28, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon
WHERE: Volunteers spread out over several observation posts along beaches of the lower Chesapeake Bay and southern Virginia coastline.* WHY: The annual count gives Virginia Aquarium researchers an idea of the relative abundance of dolphins in Virginia waters. More importantly, it provides a picture of dolphin distribution and identifies the coastal habitat areas where they are most concentrated. This is important when addressing resource management and conservation issues. Both state and federal agencies have used the Aquarium’s research on dolphins when making decisions on projects that impact the coastal marine environment.
*Media is advised to go to the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier at 15th St. for interviews of team members and see pier guests’ reactions to the count.

“Sea Cows” Venture Here - July 12, 2012 (Virginia Beach, VA) It’s not unusual for dolphins to flock to the Virginia Beach coastline in the summer but the warmer waters may also attract another marine mammal - manatees. These rotund, vegetarian, slow-moving creatures, who have earned the name of sea cows, are currently migrating up the East Coast and are particularly vulnerable to hazards.
In Virginia, manatees can be found in tributaries, inlets, bays, and marinas as they pause for a quick snack. Manatees feed on sea grasses and algae so they may be found close to piers, docks, and docked boats. Because they spend so much time on the surface, they are susceptible to being hit by boats.
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center reminds citizens that manatees are protected under the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act which means that when sighted they must be enjoyed from a distance and never fed or harassed. If seen locally, please call the Aquarium’s Stranding Response Team immediately, (757) 385-7575. Manatees can actually be identified by the scars on their backs from unfortunate encounters with boat propellers. If you can do so safely, and from a distance, please photograph the animal, note its size as well as any unique markings, and send this information to the Stranding Response Team at vaqstranding@gmail.com.

But this exceptional year of whale sightings deserves a longer season, so trips have been extended through April 1. Last week’s record-breaking high temperatures didn’t seem to bother the boat passengers or whales even though whales were sighted on 60% of the trips. Recently, some guests are getting the added bonus of seeing dolphins. To date, the Aquarium has completed 104 Winter Wildlife Boat Trips with nearly 7500 guests. Virginia Aquarium Responds to Sei Whale Stranding in Ocean View Today - February 19, 2012 View Release (Virginia Beach, VA) – At daybreak the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center received a call from the Norfolk Police regarding a large whale that appeared stranded along the surf near 1st View Street, Ocean View, Norfolk. The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team was immediately dispatched and once on location assessed the situation.
The 42-foot dead whale was identified as a male sei (pronounced ‘say’) whale. A deep 1.5 ft. gash on the back of its head (fracturing the skull) coupled with traces of orange and brown paint or rust suggests that it was hit by a vessel. Whether the whale was alive at the time of the boat strike will be determined during a necropsy. “The whale’s skin and organs are still intact and in good condition, indicating that the animal has not been dead for long,” said Susan Barco, senior scientist of the Aquarium’s Stranding Response Program.
Today measurements and images of the whale were taken. Samples were taken from the injury sight as well. “The next step is to get the whale out of the surf which requires the help of the City of Norfolk,” said Barco. “Since Monday is a city holiday and the weather conditions are expected to be unfavorable today and tomorrow, the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team anticipates performing a necropsy on Tuesday or Wednesday. Meanwhile, we will have team members on site periodically to monitor the whale. Even in death, whales such as the sei whale are protected by the federal marine mammal protection act and people should stay away from the animal, but looking and taking pictures is certainly allowed.”
This year Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trip guests have seen numerous humpbacks and two fin whales. Typically sei whales feed in the same grounds following prey inshore. Just last March there was a female sei whale that stranded in Sandbridge. The whale’s death was the result of a boat strike and its stomach contents contained plastic. Sei whales are designated by NOAA as endangered species.
The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program’s mission is to promote the conservation of marine animal species through stranding response, research, rehabilitation and education. It is largely a volunteer-based group operating from the Aquarium’s Marine Animal Care Center in Virginia Beach. The program is supported by the Virginia Aquarium Foundation through donations from the community, and grant-making organizations. To report a dead or live stranded marine mammal or sea turtle call the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program 24-hour hotline at (757) 385-7575.

Winter Wildlife Boat Trips See Multiple Whales While Underway! - February 14, 2012 View Release (Virginia Beach, VA) – The numbers speak for themselves - since January every Winter Wildlife Boat Trip has seen whales. And most trips see more than one whale. This past week each trip saw at least five humpback whales. The “Best Trip of the Week” saw pairs of humpback whales breaching all around the boat for an extended period of time. Another boat trip saw a few breaches from one of four pairs of humpback whales that they spotted.
Revised Season highlights include: • To date, the Aquarium has had 56 boat trips, 12 were cancelled due to poor weather conditions. • All boat trips have seen magnificent winter sights as well as incredible bird activity, especially from the gannets dive-bombing to eat the menhaden bait fish. • All but three boat trips have seen whales and those trips were at the beginning of the season, the last week in December. Most have seen more than one whale. • Not only have guests seen whales, but their activity has been amazing as well. Observed behaviors include lunge feeding, tail slapping and breaching out of the water. • Even dolphins have gotten “into the act” by making a few unseasonal appearances. • Nearly all of the whales are humpback whales. Also sighted were a fin whale and a minke whale that has surfaced several times. • 42 individual humpback whales have been identified by the Virginia Aquarium’s Stranding Response Team in collaboration with Allied Whale and Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. • As of last weekend, nearly 3,000 guests have enjoyed the Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trips this season.
General information about Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trips:

Guests will find on the 65-foot catamaran Rudee Whaler or Rudee Flipper, a heated cabin as well as outdoor seating on both the upper and lower decks. Guests can sip a hot beverage as they cruise along with knowledgeable Virginia Aquarium educators and scan the horizon looking for birds, harbor seals, harbor porpoises, and whales.
The Virginia Aquarium has extended its Winter Wildlife Boat Trip season through April 1. Trips typically run on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and the upcoming holiday Monday February 20. The two hour adventure costs $28 per adult (ages 12+) and $24 per child (ages 4-11). Tickets may be purchased at Aquarium Guest Services or at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center. Virginia Aquarium Responds to Cape Cod Dolphin Strandings - February 09, 2012 View Release(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.) – During the last month, the Cape Cod, Mass., dolphin strandings have grabbed national headlines, and continue to do so as they approach the highest number and longest stranding incident of its time. Last week the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center responded to this crisis by sending Stranding Response Live Animal Coordinator Linda D’Eri.
Much like human first responders who help one another in major tragedies, there is a network of stranding response organizations that support one another in critical circumstances. D’Eri is on a list of responders from several organizations who have offered to help the weary International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) responders on Cape Cod.
During D’Eri’s week-long visit she assisted in two live common dolphin stranding events, which included herding attempts and health assessments. She also conducted human interaction assessments, collected and entered data, searched for unreported strandings, and organized samples. “The national stranding network is the only way we can respond to events of this magnitude,” said D’Eri. “It’s a very collaborative effort that helps us gather data and learn more about why these animals might strand in such numbers.” D’Eri and one other Aquarium staffer is on call to return to Cape Cod.
Trained rescuers, scientists and volunteers have been working tirelessly to save the dolphins and learn more about mass strandings and common dolphin ecology. So far 149 dolphins have stranded, some seemingly healthy, others already dead or dying. Thanks to IFAW and responders from more than five other organizations, including the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program, there have been 38 successful rescues and releases
“Without the federally funded Prescott Marine Mammal Stranding Grant Program, we would not be able to send our team to assist others,” said Virginia Aquarium Director of Research & Conservation Mark Swingle. “We not only help other teams, but learn new techniques and procedures by cross training with other groups. It’s a win-win experience, just like the response to Deep Water Horizon last year.” The Virginia Aquarium sent three staff members, including D’Eri, to assist with sea turtle rehabilitation in Louisiana and Florida in spring and summer of 2010 during the oil spill.
Additional boats were launched to accommodate the crowds and none were disappointed with their sightings. One boat was fortunate enough to see 10 individual whales on their outing.
Season highlights include:
• To date, the Aquarium has had 48 boat trips, 9 were cancelled due to poor weather conditions. • All boat trips have seen magnificent winter sights as well as incredible bird activity, especially from the gannets dive-bombing to eat the menhaden bait fish. • All but three boat trips have seen whales. Most have seen more than one whale. • Not only have guests seen whales, but their activity has been amazing as well. Also sighted were a fin whale and a minke whale that has surfaced several times. • 33 individual humpback whales have been identified by the Virginia Aquarium’s Stranding Response Team in collaboration with Allied Whale and Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. • As of last Sunday, 2,389 guests have enjoyed the Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trips this season. Rain or Shine, Virginia Aquarium E-cycling Event Yields Tons! - February 02, 2012 View Release (Virginia Beach, VA) - Despite pouring rain on Saturday, January 21, volunteers and staff from the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, TFC Recycling and Goodwill Industries of Central Virginia, helped 550 cars unload their e-cycling equipment at the Aquarium’s east parking lot. The 31 tons of electronics was the largest amount collected to date.
Participant Mary Witwer shared that she had convinced her husband to part with four monitors, two printers, DVD players and other stored times. “It was great to have the opportunity to send them off for utilization by others,” Witwer said. “I was amazed to see all the semi-trucks at the event. Everyone was so happy, friendly and appreciative, even in the rain.”
Electronic recycling events help to divert electronic “waste” away from landfills and back into the economy. To date, the Aquarium’s e-cycling events have collected more than 161 tons of electronic material since this program’s inception in September 2009.
The Virginia Aquarium E-cycling program received the 2011 Virginia Green Travel Star Most Innovative Green Project Award. E-cycling events are held twice each year at the Virginia Aquarium. The mission of the Virginia Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the marine environment through education, research and sustainable practices.
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is among the first attractions in the state to become certified as a Virginia Green Attraction. Visit www.virginiaaquarium.com or call (757)385-0262 for more E-cycling Event information.

“Going Blue” With the Next Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Speaker - February 02, 2012 View Release(Virginia Aquarium, VA) – It is probably safe to say that nearly everyone loves being by the sea. Whether it is gazing at a distant view, walking along the shore, or viewing into an aquarium, there is a natural attraction and resulting peacefulness. So according to marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D., why not capture that “blue mind” and use our brains to conserve the ocean. To hear more about his passionate theories, real research and life experiences, attend The Eleanor & Henry Watts Speaker Series on Sunday, February 19, at 2 p.m. in the Virginia Aquarium 3D IMAX® Theater. The hour-long presentation, “Going Blue: Get your Mind on Using Our Brain to Conserve the Ocean,” is free. Fishers and Whales, a Tale of Caution - January 27, 2012 (Virginia Beach, VA) – Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center whale experts would like to remind fishers to be aware of whales in Virginia ocean waters and to remove fishing gear from the water so that it will not harm them. On Thursday, January 26, the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team received a report from the Rudee Flipper vessel (during a Virginia Aquarium Winter Wildlife Boat Trip) of a humpback whale that had been entangled in recreational fishing gear. The whale had been sighted several times in the area without gear, the latest date being January 21. The gear has been identified as a striped bass lure called a 'mojo' parachute lure which has a heavy lead head surrounded by a 'skirt' of fringe. At least one hook appears to be embedded in the whale's skin.
“The major concern with this type of entanglement is not the hook, but the trailing monofilament which, depending on how much line is attached, may wrap around an animal's flippers or jaw and cause lacerations, loss of circulation and/or infection,” said Susan Barco, Virginia Aquarium research coordinator and senior scientist. “Entanglements in monofilament are extremely difficult to mitigate, and disentanglement is not possible in this case. As always, the best way to protect these animals is to prevent entanglements and vessel collisions. Since so many fishers are operating vessels and deploying gear in the vicinity of whales, the Virginia Aquarium asks for their cooperation in helping prevent further injury to any animals.”
NOAA Fisheries whale watching guidelines state that no intentional approaches should be made within 500 yards (1500 feet) of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, and within 100 yards (300 feet) of other whale species. For more information, visit http://www.nero.noaa.gov/prot_res/mmv/approach.html.
If boaters encounter an entangled whale, please maintain a safe distance while attempting to keep the animal in sight and call the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team immediately at 757-385-7575.

Returning Soldier Proposes Marriage at Virginia Aquarium - January 26, 2012(Virginia Beach, VA) –This morning Infantryman Jake Schultheis, US Army, “captured his only fish in the sea” with a pre-staged romantic marriage proposal for girlfriend Cassidi Humphries at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Schultheis proposal was displayed on a board held by a volunteer diver in the Chesapeake Bay Aquarium during the usual morning education dive program.
It took a moment for Humphries to realize that the board message was intended just for her as it read, “There are many fish in the sea. You are the only one for me. Will you marry me, Cassidi? Love, Jake.” Humphries looked in awe as Schultheis got down on his knee, popped open a lighted ring box and presented her with a sparkling diamond ring. Humphries breathlessly replied “Yes!,” and kisses followed. Equally surprised to be a part of the romantic occasion were nearby guests and staff who gave a collective “awww” and applauded.
Schultheis, who recently returned from nearly a year of duty in the combat zone of Afghanistan, is stationed at Fort Knox, KY. He contacted the Virginia Aquarium last November to explore the possibility of a special proposal. “Cassidi and I had met through a friend last New Year’s Eve less than a week before I left and we just instantly hit it off, “said Schultheis. They continued their romance via phone, email, skype and a mid-deployment reunion in August. Humphries is from Roanoke, Va. where the couple hopes to eventually reside.
Wedding ceremonies, rehearsal dinners and other special occasions are frequently celebrated at the Virginia Aquarium located at 717 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA.
